On Page SEO

One of the most powerful SEO techniques you can use is internal linking. This will help the search engines understand exactly which pages are important within your website and what search terms they should be indexed for.

Let's face it. The search robots are just that; robots. They are not intelligent beings able to read between the lines or understand the finer points of web content. They can only read the data given to them and return calculated conclusions based on the data it has found. By giving them specific bits of information, you can give them concrete information that they can tabulate into results.

Internal linking is one way to give those robots important information. Suppose you have a sales page within your website. Your sales page sells WordPress widgets. The keyword you want to rank in the search engine is "WordPress widgets". Through internal linking you can communicate that to the search engines by linking the keyword phrase "WordPress widgets" from any other page that happens to mention those words back to your sales page.

If every page on your website mentions your key phrase just once and each instance has a link back to your sales page, the robot will say "okay, that page must be about "WordPress widgets" and they will indeed rank it accordingly. But let's say you want to rank for more than one keyword. What do you do then?

Easy, you build internal links for a number of keywords all leading back to the sales page. This of course will build over the course of time as you build more and more content to your website. I recommend focusing on one main keyword to start. This will give you a much more concentrated effort and you will see results faster. Once you have established that keyword phrase with the search engine results you can then introduce another and do the same making sure you maintain the first keyword while establishing a second.

Continue to use this on page SEO technique and you will find that your site will become an authority site that dominates almost any niche over the course of time. There is no limit to the number of keywords you can rank for. You are only limited by the amount of content you have on your website.

Now, do not make the mistake of having an over abundance of links on each page. You do not want to have more than 2 or 3 anchor text internal links on any given page and never duplicate the link within the same content. If you are creating internal links for one sales page, then you will have only one internal link per page.

If you have multiple sales pages within your website all being ranked for different keyword phrases, you may have up to 3 internal links per page so long as you are not duplicating anything.
